BIRLIKTE ATAN KALPLER /HEARTS BEATING AS ONE
On December 2nd from approximately 9 schools special students came to our school. First ate our breakfast and we watched the show of our school choir and the show of a magician together. Then we danced. After we went to the gym to do some athletics tracks. As volunteers we helped them with these tracks. It was a really good activity. They were really happy and seeing them happy made me feel good because I understood that we achieved our goal.

Sometimes I felt really weak about myself because it was harder than I thought. I felt like I was going to hurt them somehow or I thought that am I being harsh to them and hurt their feelings. But eventually nothing bad happened and that was a great day for me. I had a lot of fun while we were dancing meanwhile singing the same songs out loud. As a result I am very grateful with this experience.

Today I attended the ‘Hearts Beating As One’ activity in my school with my friends. It was a nice activity and I enjoyed it. I met with new children, played athletic games, basketball and talked with them. I think the best part was the athletics. In this part, I met a cute girl named Ezgi Nur and I loved her a lot. We completed the track together and had fun. I didn’t encountered any difficulties in this activity and I think I didn’t had any weaknesses. In the beginning of the year I was afraid to get emotional, but with time and the help of my other CAS activity ‘Ali Aktürk Özel Eğitim Kurumu’ it’s easy to communicate and have fun with children. My strength in this activity was my communication skills and love for children. By doing this activity I hoped to accomplish to entertain children and improve my collaborative skills, and I think I was good at these. I don’t think this activity changed me, since it’s a short term activity, but it give me ideas about different games that we can use in ‘Ali Aktürk Özel Eğitim Kurumu’ activity. So it had some impacts on me.

On 2nd of December, one day before the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we were in Bilkent for an activity. Special children from various schools came to our campus and we spent our time together with the special children. My job was to work collaboratively with my group and help the children eat and socialize. Then, playing basketball with them as a partner player. My goal was to build a good connection with the children and be able to help them. After eating breakfast, the opening ceremony was held at the conference hall. I felt so emotional when I saw the children having fun. Sometimes it was difficult for me to communicate with the children because it was too crowded. Also, in some situations, I couldn’t know what to say and how to respond to the children. Not to offend them was really important for me. It was the first time that I had the opportunity to spend time with mentally disabled children. I was great to communicate with them, getting to know and understand them. When playing basketball, I was able to quickly form a bond with my team and we played well. I am now more confident for attending this kind of activities and I plan to attend more.
